Fish artist Niina Räty explains what happened:
For the last few years I have painted fish and even caught a few. From my inner universe I have communicated with my collegues about the fish, painting and eating them, if they have purpose, and herring beef. I invited some fish makers to participate in this exhibition.
Historical art is full of posing fish, silver-sided fish on silver trays, fish chest by chest with the translucent onion, or just hanging around the filthy marketplace. The fish picture is full of meanings, many of them with Jesus, feeling of nothingness and of course the everyday fish. But mainly it seems to be about the purity of joy of the painter. Fish is a longish form that flips the light.
Other artists of the exhibition thinking about the fish:
Whether in water or can, fish bring great utilitarian joy to people. Man makes love to fish so passionately that eco-systems are shaking.
- Mikko Sauli
The philosopher of the past is fishing in the white night due to insomnia.
- Liisa Karintaus
What's fishness in us? It's the hands-free, no legs, mute, silence, darkness, moisture, doing nothing, archaic immobility. Man meets man in the eye of the fish. The portrait of a fish is a portrait of a man.
- Siiri Haarla
Often in childhood we adopt the traditions and symbolics related to fishing. One generation after another fish the same way.
- Melina Paakkonen
Resting place is where the fish has home.
- Maija Helasvuo
In greek ikhtys, the fish was a confession of faith of the early christians and one of the oldest Jesus tags. One church daddy describes Jesus as the big fish and christianity as many small fish.
- Ilkka Sariola
In darkness, in light, skinny dipping.
- Mikko Paakkonen
Fish is a beautiful movement.
- Riikka Laitinen
Athletically long and loud-mouth, that's the pike as always. Looks and acts like himself since a pike boy.
- Outimaija Hakala
