Strata

Petra Martinez & Inka Wallgren

| a layer of material, naturally or artificially formed, often one of a number of parallel layers one upon another |

Strata is a joint project by artist duo Petra Martinez and Inka Wallgren that was started in spring 2022; a process-based and transformative installation work. The starting point of the work is found and recycled material and stuff rediscovered laying around in the corners of the artist studio. The instinctive and spontaneous processing of the materials lead into several different co-created outcomes in different locations. The first part of Strata was exhibited in the parallel program of Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale in the summer of 2022 in Fiskars' Old Foundry. After the YÖ KEKRI exhibition the work will be again dismantled and packed up to await a possible future form and location. The progress of the work and the creator duo´s search for a shared view can be followed on the instagram account s_t_r_a_t_a.

The SUN RAY HUNTER
pop-up installation

Natalia Koziel-Kalliomäki, Ina Heiskanen, Jyrki Sinisalo & Annette Wesseling

The artists discuss the issue of light and then share its different definitions with public at the YÖ gallery. Through their works the artists wish to boost the connection with natural power of sun and strong beam of light to illuminate the months to come and better prepare for poorly lit Finnish winter.

Among the other artist’s works I will present an installation THE SUN RAY HUNTER - solar inventory – a record of the sun traces collected from different countries – by using one of the earliest low-tech processes known in the history of printmaking: the cyanotype method, commonly known as the sun printing. Collected files will be to share straight at the gallery. You can keep it in your pocket and save it forever.

In The SUN RAY HUNTER pop-up show we are looking for actions that engage many senses. Exhibited elements involve the viewer, through the experience of art they becomes contemplative and even meditative. In addition to its sensual visual aspect, the aim of this project is to evoke a feeling of connection and coexistence.

This project is supported by TAIKE Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Avohaave

Veera Lamberg, Julia Gauffin, Mia Kivinen, Kalle Ahonen, Janne Masalin & Inari Pesonen

Avohaave is a work-in-progress performance that takes inspiration from dreaming.

The performance is based on curiosity about how our boundless childhood dreams appear to us as adults and how we relate to our accumulated dreams. How do our wishes change over time and what do they look like when they come true?

The working group is composed of professionals from different art fields who have gathered together with a common dream. In the current situation in the world, dreaming feels like a radical and desperately needed step towards hope.

Julia Gauffin  director & performer, Veera Lamberg choreographer and performer. Lighting design Mia Kivinen, scenography Kalle Ahonen, sound design Janne Masalin, producer Inari Pesonen.

The Air We Share 2.0

Kamila Śladowska, Giorgio Convertito, Liina Kuittinen & Willem Wilhelmus

Artists from the fields of performance art, dance, music, poetry, visual arts present their works and collaborate with each other. It will be an experiment in creating live art forms oscillating between individual and collective actions.

The Air We Share 2.0 is meant as a radical medicine against the stupor that took hold of society because of covid19 and this brain dead war. We need to come together again to share the most humane of human actions: experimental live art.

For such an experiment we will only invite professional artists who are able to trust their skills and at the same time be sensitive for others (colleagues and audience) to allow for improvisation when needed. Each evening event five artists from the fields of performance art, dance, music, poetry, visual arts will present their works.

The organising team members are visual artist Kamila Śladowska, dancer Giorgio Convertito and performance artists Liina Kuittinen and Willem Wilhelmus. The team is varied in gender, age and nationality, but they all share the commitment to make experimental live arts as challenging and accessible as possible to the cultural scene in Helsinki. The event organised in Yö Kekri is exceptional as the performing artists are the members of the working group.

Yö Pajat | Recreation
sewing workshop

Anastasia Artemeva

Welcome to a sewing workshop as part of Leftover Limbs installation at Yö Kekri group installation.

Who is this for: This workshop is for anyone practising art and handicraft, professionally or leisurely or both, persons who would like to share skills and work methodologies in a supportive environment. We follow Safer Space guidelines.

What you will need: You are encouraged to bring along an unfinished project. It can be a textiles project, but it does not have to be - a text, a drawing, a funding application. We will apply the concepts of sewing and mending to any possible processes. For those joining us on-site there will be a limited amount of materials available free of charge.

Duration: 4 hrs with breaks. Please bring your own snack and water bottle if you are joining us on-site.

What we will do: We will get together and make. There will be a chance to share the experiences of dealing with unfinished projects, unused materials and the infinite to-do lists. What can we create from a cut out dress pattern even when it will no longer fit? What can we create with the fabric cut offs ? What is the meaning and the value in the materials and actions leftover, unused and undone? How can we preserve and value the unfinished work ? We will learn sewing techniques, collage, spatial installation technique and will formulate concrete ideas for artistic works.

Recreation: a series of projects and multimedia installations around the act of sewing, the spaces of confinement and ritual. Through visual, performative and dialogical processes we investigate assumed social roles, ideas of judgement, as well as personal and collective boundaries.
