Young Anon discovers the digital, binary root of everything during a school trip to New York and comes to a surprising conclusion.

An associative and abstractly structured video about the boundaries of communication in the hinterland between analog and digital - a study at gaps between looking and understanding. The mixed form of the work reflects the current space of apparent intangibility and connection. How the past is encoded in the specific recording media and how it behaves after the radical equalization by the internet.

The narrator, who remains anonymous, returns to an isolated event from the mid-2010s, leaving unclear its relevance in the broader context. The image, with its combination of an analog video signal with forms of compression, produces a kind of aesthetic that emphasizes nostalgia and alienation.

A film about how language, be it film, art or written language, creates in itself a system where separation precedes contact.

”In and out of cells and organelles
cells signaling to each other
look up, look up,
a prism of prisons hook-up to the main line
the skyline the safety barge of filtering
media; we choose what we conduct,
infiltrate truth through permeable barriers
wake up the maestro in our cell self,
spirit self stands en guard
stand back from yourself
this tissue between regions.”

’Where things are when they are not happening’, 2020, Janette Ayachi

The film MEMBRANE is the result of a year long collaboration begun in 2020 between the Scottish-Finnish visual artist Anneli Holmström, the Scottish-Algerian poet Janette Ayachi and the Finnish media artist Joakim Finholm. Through the film, the artists have been considering in their respective medias the concept of the semi permeable membrane as a narrative springboard to reflect on issues of the covid pandemic, social distancing, personal isolation, transitional spaces, biological worlds and sublimes solitudes. The film is the fruits of this dialogue. The film script, props and direction was done by Anneli Holmström, the film sound and edititing by Joakim Finholm while the audio poetry work was written and read by Janette Ayachi.

This film was made possible with the kind production support of Svenska Kulturfonden and by Platform's New Normal commissions. So far, the film has been screened at Pimento in Oulo, at The Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh and at Galleria Artista in Kokkola. The screening at Yö Galleria in Helsinki will be the first showing in the capital.
